Doris Tolbert Hite
It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Doris Tolbert Hite. Doris T. Hite, 87, passed away peacefully on March 27, 2025, surrounded by family at her home in Upper Marlboro, Maryland.
Born on February 18, 1938, in Washington, D.C., Doris lived a life marked by devotion to her faith, her profession, and the communities she touched. She forged a groundbreaking career in computer programming at the University of the District of Columbia during an era when few women entered the field. Her technical expertise and pioneering spirit helped pave the way for future generations of women in technology.
A lifelong Catholic, Doris was an active and dedicated member of St. Joseph Catholic Church. Her faith served as a guiding force throughout her life. She generously volunteered her time to support the church's mission and was especially involved with the Sodality ministry, where she played a meaningful role in fostering spiritual growth and encouraging service among fellow parishioners.
Doris will be fondly remembered by those who knew her through church, work, and community life. Her legacy is one of quiet strength, unwavering faith, and lasting impact.Doris Tolbert Hite leaves to cherish her memory: children Denise Huntley (Abdul Adem), John Huntley, Jr. (Jackie), and Tawanna Watson (Darrell); stepchildren Jocelyn Harris (Timothy), and Russell Hite, Jr.; five grandchildren: John Huntley, III (Farrah), Keijuana Pearson (John), Amir Adem, Jarin Watson, and Sameya Adem-Frazier (Jeremiah); three step-grandchildren; six great-grandchildren: Janiah, Jadah, John IV, Jaylen, Kennedy, and Cairo; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends. Doris was preceded in death by her husband, parents, and siblings: William N. Tolbert, Jr., Barbara F. Jones, and Noyd R. Tolbert; mother and father-in-law Margaret T. Hite and James R. Hite; and sister-in-law Geraldine Y. Tolbert; and brother-in law Nathan Jones.
